March 16, 2014 - School Visits

This week has been ultra crazy and fun for kids programs! We've had birthdays, tours, classroom visits, plus all of our normal free programs. We're loving it! Not to mention with the weather finally warming up we have tons of people and kids in the store every day. Talk about a blast! This week has been AWESOME!

School Visits

You're might be thinking, "Pet World does tours and Classroom visits?" The answer is YES! You can read more about them here. This week I went to four second grade classrooms to do HERP lessons (reptiles and amphibians). I generally bring a few amphibians, some lizards and some snakes. We get them out one at a time and talk about them, then everyone gets to touch or hold them. It's an awesome, grand finale for these kids that work so hard during their herp units in school!

While I was visiting one classroom this week the school had a practice fire drill! I had forgotten how loud those sirens were in schools! The animals were totally fine, probably less startled than me. The whole event ended up being hilarious and we started up right where we had left off after the drill was over! I’ve been to tons of schools but that was definitely a first!

See you soon!

Feb 23, 2014 - AAD, SNAKES, and classroom visits

SnakeWe have spots open for the March 29th Animals After Dark! If you have a child aged 5-8 who loves pizza, animals, and fun then Animals After Dark might be perfect! It also doubles as a little parents night out. You drop them off at 6:30pm and pick them up at 10:00pm! We'll take them across the street for Wheat State Pizza, then meet some animals up close in personal in our Education Room as the staff closes up the store. After the store is closed - we bring the kids out to observe some of the nocturnal animals with our flashlights before we play hide and seek! Whether you're a regular at AAD or a newcomer it's always a fun time!

Lately at our Birthday Parties SNAKES have been a big hit! We even held Goliath at a couple of parties in the last month. Our gentle, big ol' burmese python is always exciting to get out for parties. Another unique opportunity some of our birthday kids have opted for recently is getting to observe a live snake feeding. We're blessed that not only are Pet World Parties fun - but educational! We will jump on any opportunity to let children observe and learn from animals and feeding a snake is no different. After explaining what will happen and how snakes eat, we give any child who doesn't wish to watch an alternative activity to do while the others are watching a snake feeding (sometimes a small group will go hold small animals, or look at the fish while the other group watches the feeding). Then we'll quiet the kids down and offer one of our snakes an appropriately sized rodent. The kids will observe as the snake takes notice of the food, strikes, constricts, and eventually swallows the meal. The kids have to stay nearly silent (because if a snake feels they're in danger they will not eat) and very still. It's amazing to see young children so entranced by nature that they're able to stay so still and quiet for so long. After it's over, we often times talk about what happened and answer any questions. Below are a few pictures from recent parties.

The Pet World staff loves hamsters! These little animals are playful, personable, and super cute. We have a wide variety of friendly and playful hamsters for sale. See below for a list of some of the hamsters we have for sale!

We've also started to book classroom visits for the spring! One of the best parts of our jobs is getting the opportunity to go to schools and teach children about animals and give them unique, hands on experiences with animals they may otherwise never get a change to interact with.

Jan 26, 2014 - Returning campers and fast selling spots!

Pet World Werker

One of our followers on Facebook was nice enough to share this picture with us! This was on her daughter's homework. "When I grow up, I want to be a Pet World Werker." We absolutely melted when we read it! Thanks, Mrs.Cooper, for sharing! It's things like this that make working at Pet World such a special experience.

This is the last week to turn in your Junior Volunteer Applications! If you need to download one so you can get it filled out and return it quickly the link can be found here.

Past Campers

We only have a few spots left for our Spring Break Camp. If you haven't looked at the information about it yet it's a lot of fun! Similar to our Animal and Critter Camps in the summer - just without the field trips - this program teaches kids about all the different animals we have in the store. On Monday we learn about Small Mammals, Tuesday about birds, Wednesday about fish, Thursday about reptiles, then on Friday it's Campers Choice. Kids learn all about these different types of animals, how to take care of them, have lots of hands on experiences with them and then on Friday we can focus on the animals the group has been most interested in. For more information, or to print your registration form, click here.

Year after year we have new and returning campers visiting our store. Pictured on the left are two of our returning summer campers posing with Ande and a bunny. These kids have become expert animal handlers after attending our camps! On the right is another returning camper who, as a special reward for doing well in school, asked to visit Pet World! These kids make the down and dirty parts of this job so worth it!
