Perhaps one of the products we use the most inside of Pet World is Neutral Regulator. This awesome product for the aquarist covers nearly all of the basics for safe fish water! Available in both liquid and powder form, Neutral Regulator does several things. First, it makes tap water safe by removing chlorine, chloramines, and ammonia. Second, it adjusts the pH of the water either up or down to bring it to a neutral pH of 7.0, which is the preferred pH of most freshwater fish. While there are other great products that either make tap water safe, or that can adjust the pH, Neutral Regulator is unique in that it does both in a very reasonably priced product.
More helpful information about Neutral Regulator:
- Lawrence tap water tends to be rather high in pH (about 7.8) due to an abundance of limestone in the area. For this reason you will most likely need to increase the dose recommended on the bottle when treating Lawrence tap water.
- It's safe to go over the recommended dosage - typically, twice the recommended dosage is just fine if needed.
- Neutral Regulator can be added directly to a tank with fish in it. (However, use common sense - don't dump it right on top of a fish!)
- Although in most cases Neutral Regulator is the only product required to treat tap water before pouring into the tank, don't forget to check the temperature of your new water before pouring it into your tank! Additional water should reach approximately the same temperature of the existing water in your tank. Adding water that is too hot or too cold can shock and kill your fish and is a common trigger for ick.
